Marine and Environmental Law: Retrospect and Prospects

The Marine & Environmental Law Institute (MELAW) and the Marine & Environmental Law Program (MELP) at ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ hosted a two-day hybrid conference to mark the 20th anniversary of MELAW and the 50th anniversary of MELP.

This event took place on May 20–21, 2025, at the Weldon Law Building of the Schulich School of Law.

The conference brought together scholars, practitioners, and students to reflect on the development and influence of marine and environmental law, and to explore emerging challenges and future directions in the field. It also provided an opportunity to celebrate the rich legacy of MELP as a teaching specialization and MELAW as a leading research institute at the Schulich School of Law. Some attendees participated from all over the globe virtually, and a was issued.

A special portion of the program - including the keynote address, special reflections on the origin story of MELP and a special address - was opened to the broader community onÌýMonday, May 20,ÌýfromÌý4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A gala reception in the Atrium followed.
